What is heartworm disease? Canine heartworm disease should be a concern for ALL dog owners. Where there are mosquitoes, there is heartworm disease. Heartworms are actual worms that live in the heart and blood vessels, while the immature form of the worm circulates in the bloodstream. The disease is contracted through the bite of a mosquito which is carrying the microfilaria (the immature heartworms). Many cases of heartworm disease can go undetected until clinical signs become severe. What are signs of heartworm disease? Signs include exercise intolerance, weight loss, and coughing. How does the disease progress? The infected heart becomes enlarged, in part due to the growing worms in its chambers. The heart must jump more forcefully to move blood past obstructed arteries. Fluid accumulates in the lungs as a result of the increased blood pressure. Eventually, the heart fails, unable to maintain its increased size and level of exertion on a diminished oxygen supply. How can heartworm disease be prevented? Heartworm prevention begins with a simple blood test. Our clinic uses a quick snap test that tests for heartworm as well as Lyme disease, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma. We test annually to ensure your pet remains negative for heartworm disease before continuing on their preventative course of treatment. If your pet tests negative for heartworm, you will be sent home with heartworm preventative medication which consists of a chewable tablet that you will administer once a month at home. We recommend maintaining your pet on heartworm preventative all year round, even through winter, to ensure that the cycle of prevention is not broken. Heartgard (our most popular brand of heartworm prevention) also provides effective treatment and control of roundworms and hookworms.
